World News Day is a global initiative to draw public attention to the role that journalists play in providing trustworthy news and information that serves citizens and democracy. World News Day takes place annually on September 28.
World News Day is presented by the World Editors Forum, The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) and Project Kontinuum.
Founded in 1990, The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) fosters excellence in journalism through the support and recognition of emerging and experienced journalists and their organizations and enhances the public’s understanding of fact-based journalism.
The CJF facilitates dialogue about the role of journalism in Canadian society and the ongoing challenges for journalism in the digital era through its J-Talks public speakers series, which are hosted at venues across Canada and online. The Foundation recognizes excellence in journalism through its prestigious awards programs, which are showcased at the CJF’s annual gala. Through its fellowships programs, the Foundation provides opportunities for journalism education, training and research to encourage a diverse Canadian media.
The World Editors Forum (WEF) is the network for editors within the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), the global organisation of the world’s press. The World Editors Forum promotes quality journalism and newsroom transformation and works to protect the rights of journalists to operate freely and perform their crucial role in society.
WAN-IFRA connects 3,000 news publishing companies and technology entrepreneurs. It is affiliated to 60 member publisher associations representing 18,000 publications in 120 countries.
It serves as a knowledge hub and a leading global resource for editors, publishers, news publisher associations and research centres with three focus areas: Press Freedom and Journalism, Media Sustainability, and Media Innovation.
WAN-IFRA supports the growth of consumer technologies in new news media consumption patterns by delivering four main services: Innovation and business development, news and insights, advocacy and networking. Every year, 9,000 executives working in 3,500 news organisations, technology enterprises and trade bodies use WAN-IFRA services.
Project Kontinuum is a global media initiative, led by Daily Maverick co-founder Branko Brkic, to advance journalism, innovation and sustainability.
The International Fund for Public Interest Media – aims to enable global media markets to work for democracy.
The ICN (Independent Communications Network), founded in 2025, is a developing network dedicated to organizing independent media outlets and associations.
The mission is to work closely with others to establish a vibrant international communications network that strengthens the many diverse voices of independent media. The ICN is managed by its members and supported by the independent media regulator Impress.
The core work of the network is to provide independent media with a shared campaign platform and spaces – such as workshops and events – for exchange and collaboration. In doing so independent media is amplified, synergies are created, and joint initiatives are encouraged.
Our main objectives are:
- Connecting independent media organizations and associations.
- Supporting the global establishment of new associations.
- Representing interests and conducting awareness campaigns on behalf of independent media and associations.
